How Rapid Rewards value is calculated
The method is the same for every programme: take the cash fare you would genuinely have bought, subtract the taxes and carrier-imposed surcharges you still pay on the award, then divide by the points spent. That gives cents per point. Multiply it by your balance to get an estimated value.
Points redeem against Southwest fares at a rate tied to the cash price, with no change fees on most fare types.
Economy versus premium-cabin redemptions
Economy awards usually land near the conservative end of the range, because the cash fare you are displacing is cheap. Premium cabins move the figure up sharply — the cash price of a long-haul business seat is several times an economy seat, while the points required rarely rises by the same multiple.
Rapid Rewards is the clearest programme to value: divide the cash fare by the points price and you have an accurate cents-per-point figure.
When Rapid Rewards points can be worth more
- Long-haul premium cabins priced from a chart rather than from the cash fare.
- Partner availability that a cash shopper would have to pay a peak fare for.
- Low carrier-imposed surcharges on the specific routing.
- Awards booked on dates where cash pricing spikes.
When Rapid Rewards points can be worth less
- Short-haul economy against an already-discounted fare.
- Dynamic pricing that pegs the point price to the cash price.
- High surcharges that eat most of the saving.
- A balance sitting idle with no realistic redemption before expiry.

Buy, sell or redeem Rapid Rewards points?
Redeeming is normally the highest-value option, because it captures the full fare you avoid. Buying points only makes sense when the purchase price plus surcharges is clearly below the cash fare for an award you have already found. Selling is a last resort for a balance with no plausible redemption — and your programme's own terms govern whether that is permitted at all.
Southwest sells points directly through its website, occasionally with promotional pricing.
