British Airways

The British Airways Club

The British Airways Club is BA's loyalty programme and uses Avios, a currency shared with Iberia, Aer Lingus, Vueling and Qatar Airways under separate programme wrappers.

BA's Reward Flight Saver caps cash charges on many short-haul awards, while long-haul awards can carry substantial carrier-imposed surcharges that must be included in any honest valuation.

Earning Avios

Avios accrue on BA and oneworld flights, UK and US co-brand cards, the BA Shopping portal, hotel partners and Tier Point promotions.

Redeeming Avios

Avios book BA and partner flights, upgrades, and part-cash Reward Flight Saver bookings. Availability is released in tiers by cabin.

Expiry rules

Avios remain valid while the account records qualifying activity within BA's stated window. Verify the current rule with British Airways.

Transfers and pooling

Avios can be combined between BA, Iberia, Aer Lingus, Vueling and Qatar under the shared Avios framework, subject to each programme's rules.

Buying Avios from British Airways

British Airways sells Avios directly and runs periodic bonus purchase promotions.

Where the value sits

Because long-haul BA awards add surcharges, the correct valuation subtracts those cash charges from the fare you avoid.

The British Airways Club questions

Are Avios the same across airlines?
Avios is a shared currency across BA, Iberia, Aer Lingus, Vueling and Qatar Airways, but each programme has its own award pricing and rules.
What is Reward Flight Saver?
A BA option that caps the cash element on many awards in exchange for more Avios. It changes the maths considerably on short-haul.
Do BA surcharges matter for valuation?
Yes, materially. A long-haul award with high surcharges delivers less value per Avios than the headline saving suggests.
