Award travel

Award changes and cancellations

Award flexibility varies enormously. Knowing your programme's rules before booking is part of valuing the redemption properly.

Redeposit fees

Some programmes redeposit miles free, others charge a per-ticket fee, and discounted award fares are often non-refundable entirely.

Changes

Date and routing changes may be free, charged, or require full cancellation and rebooking at current pricing — which is the real risk in dynamic programmes.

Involuntary changes

If the airline cancels, statutory passenger rights generally apply to award tickets too, including rerouting or refund obligations in many jurisdictions.

Questions

Do I get surcharges back if I cancel?
Usually yes, subject to the programme's cancellation policy and any fees.
Are award tickets covered by passenger rights rules?
In many jurisdictions yes, though compensation calculations can differ. Check the rules for your route.
