How much are AAdvantage miles worth?
Two different numbers get confused here, so we keep them apart.
Estimated redemption value is the cash fare you avoid by using AAdvantage miles for a flight. On our typical working assumption of 1.6 cents per mile, 100,000 miles represent about $1,600 of avoided fare. See the AAdvantage value page for the full method and a calculator.

- How long does the process take?
- We aim to respond to a complete request within one business day. What happens after that depends on the specifics of the request, and we do not promise a settlement timeframe we cannot control.
- Can expired AAdvantage miles be sold?
- No. Once miles have lapsed they no longer exist to transfer. Miles generally expire after a defined period of account inactivity; qualifying earning or redeeming activity resets the clock. Verify the current window with American.
- Should I redeem my AAdvantage miles instead?
- In most cases, yes. Because American's own awards price dynamically, valuation is best done against the specific cash fare you would otherwise buy rather than a generic cents-per-mile figure. If you have no plausible redemption within the programme's validity window, a sale becomes worth considering.
